Just back from Spain…..

January 25, 2010

Spain has been drenched in rain.  The countryside is green and the ground sprinkled with delicate yellow flowers. We went from Malaga to Mijas and from Mijas to Ronda.  Outside Ronda we visited caves and saw drawings dating back 30,000 years.  It was an incredible sight.  From Ronda we went to Jerez, the land of sherry.  A visit to the Tio Pepe bodega was a real treat.  We finished our tour with a tasting of four sherries, a plate of thinly sliced ham and some cheese.  I went to the Spanish School of Horses, it was exquisite.  Horse and rider performed perfect dressage moves to music.  From Jerez to Los Gauchos, and staying with friends.  Relaxing, drinking and eating.  Walking along the sea front and generally allowing the days to slip away.  From here I drove for hours to the other side of Marbella and high up into the mountains towards Casares.  But my friends lived down in the valley and turning off the road I followed a dirt track for a mile or more until I came to their house nestling down by the river at the bottom.  What beauty, what peace and what a welcome.   We danced and we ate and we drank and finally we went to bed, Spanish time.  The advantage being we also got up – Spanish time.  The freedom of no big brother telling us how much we should eat or drink, or smoke or walk.  The freedom of not knowing what time you were going to bed and what time you were waking up.  I can recommend Spain in the winter.  I recommend the joys of travel.
